How long should you let your container candle burn?

You might think that as long as there is wax to burn, your candle is good to just stay lit. For safety, though, you shouldn't let your container candle burn for more than 4 hours at a time. The glass can end up overheating causing potential shattering, especially as it gets closer to the bottom and there's less wax to distribute the heat.

How long should it be lit at first?

When you first light your brand new candle, a good rule of thumb is to let it burn for 1 hour per inch of diameter. So for a 3 inch wide candle, letting it burn for 3 hours will ensure that the "melt pool", or the amount of melted wax you see, can reach the edge of the candle all the way to the glass. This will prevent a melt tunnel from forming. Wax ends up with a sort of "memory" of where it last melted to and doesn't like to go beyond that the next time it's burned.
